Gifted Students Mix Competitions with Knowledge Exchange

(Hong Kong – 23 September 2014) The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) and the International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) are first-class competitions which enable students from different regions to compete with top-notchers in their areas of strength. Besides the abovementioned international competitions, Hong Kong students also participate in a range of regional contests in Asia, for example, the Pan-Pearl River Delta Physics Olympiad, the IMC International Mathematics Competition (Singapore), the China Girls' Mathematical Olympiad (CGMO), the China Western Mathematical Invitation (CWMI) and the National Mathematical Forum for Youth, to exchange knowledge with their fellow contestants and gain valuable competition experience.

A team of Hong Kong representatives comprised of student members of the Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education (HKAGE) competed in the 55th IMO held in South Africa and won 4 silver and 2 bronze medals some time earlier. Nevertheless, only 6 (5) top students can be selected to represent Hong Kong to participate in the IMO or IPhO. To give more opportunities for students to gain these valuable international experiences, it is important for our gifted student members to take part in other Asian or regional contests which provide them with the opportunity to exchange ideas with fellow students, broaden their competition experience and fulfil their true potential.

Recently, the Hong Kong teams made up of a number of HKAGE student members have participated in the CGMO 2014, the CWMI 2014 and the 12th National Mathematical Forum for Youth respectively.

In the CGMO 2014, in which a total of 147 participants from 38 teams competed, collaboratively supported by the International Mathematical Olympiad (Hong Kong) Committee, the Education Bureau and the HKAGE, the Hong Kong team got 4 silver and 4 bronze medals. In the CWMI 2014, which attracted 159 competitors from 16 countries, the Hong Kong team also put in excellent performances, winning 2 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze medals.

The 12th National Mathematical Forum for Youth featured a variety of fun and educational games through which the young participants could interact with each other. Collaboratively supported by the International Mathematical Olympiad (Hong Kong) Committee and the HKAGE, The Hong Kong representatives collected a total of 1 gold, 1 silver and 4 bronze medals.

The HKAGE encourages Hong Kong students to widen their horizons through participating in different competitions. By taking up challenges, students will be able to find their own learning paths. Additionally, we encourage other educational bodies to help Hong Kong students obtain more international competition experience, thereby nurturing their growth.
