HKAGE Student Members Grab 5 Medals in Singapore’s Raffles Invitational Mathematical Olympiad

(Hong Kong – 18 March 2014) Having completed the training programme jointly organised by the Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education (HKAGE) and the International Mathematical Olympiad Hong Kong Committee, four student members of the HKAGE represented the Academy to make its debut at the 2nd Raffles Invitational Mathematical Olympiad (RIMO). In the end, they won one gold, two silver and one bronze medals. One of the team members, Wong Sze Nga, also received the Best Girl Performance Award. Their outstanding achievements are not only a source of pride to Hong Kong, but also recognition of the Academy’s effort in promoting gifted education.

The contest organised by Singapore’s Raffles Institution ran from 20 to 25 January 2014 in Singapore. 21 teams representing different regions and countries, including China, Hong Kong, France, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand competed for the awards.

TANG Dik Man Damian, a Secondary Five student of LaSalle College, had a remarkable performance which led him to win a silver award. Damian, who has won several awards in various mathematics competitions, shared his feelings about winning in the RIMO. He enjoyed the competition and said, “The competition provided me with great inspiration, enabling me to acquire various problem-solving skills and improve my mathematical knowledge. More importantly, the post-competition review gave me new insights into better solutions to the problems.”

WONG Chun Shing, who represented the HKAGE to compete in a mathematical olympiad clinched a bronze medal, mentioned that he highly valued the opportunity to compare notes and compete with elite students from different countries, and he felt especially grateful to the HKAGE for providing him with professional and adequate training, which he found tremendously useful.
