Gifted Students Recognised in Local and International Competitions Are Encouraged to Use Their Talents to Benefit Others
(Hong Kong – 17 January 2023) At the 3rd Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education (HKAGE or the Academy) Outstanding Student Awards Ceremony held on 13 January 2023, Gifted Star Awards, Outstanding Student Award and Outstanding Alumnus Award were presented to 15 student members and alumni to recognise their outstanding attainments in various local and international competitions.
Ir Dr LAM Hiu Fung Alan, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the HKAGE, said at the ceremony that the annual awards presentation ceremony was originally proposed by him when he first took office as Chairman of the HKAGE, with the aim of encouraging outstanding students. ‘Among the various international competitions in which outstanding achievements were attained by our students this year, many were competitions in innovative technologies. While the national "14th Five-Year Plan" indicates clear support for Hong Kong's development into an international innovation and technology hub, gifted students will play an important role in this regard. The HKAGE is committed to nurturing gifted students to become quality seeds in such development. I hope our student members will uphold Hong Kong's core values, shine brightly, and become important pillars of society in future.’
Outstanding Student and Alumnus
Among the 14 Gifted Star Awards winners(please refer to the awardee list for details), CHENG Yat Long, currently a year-1 student at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, was also presented the Outstanding Student Award. Yat Long has completed 64 programmes in the HKAGE and has represented Hong Kong and won numerous awards in various International Science Olympiads. He was also a winner of the HKAGE’s Gifted Star Award back in 2020.
Alumnus YIP Chi Ching Anson was presented the Outstanding Alumnus Award. The gifted big brother has learned martial arts from his father, a then Kung Fu master, since childhood and is now running a martial arts training organisation for promoting martial arts to the public. Anson is also committed to youth work and has established a training centre to serve the youth at risk. The organisation he founded was the first martial arts organisation in Hong Kong to win the Hong Kong Outstanding Corporate Citizenship Award (Volunteer Team).
In his spare time, Mr YIP is actively engaged in voluntary work and contribute to society. He was selected by the then Home Affairs Bureau as an Youth Ambassador in 2019, and was awarded the Greater Bay Area Young Leader Award in the same year. Mr YIP has been supporting the HKAGE as a volunteer alumnus for several years. He has delivered talks to parents of gifted students and served as instructor of the Academy’s talent development programmes for student members.
Participation in Face-to-face International Competitions to Resume Normal
Dr WONG Kam Yiu Jimmy, Executive Director of the HKAGE, said in his Closing Remarks, ‘Over the past year, the HKAGE has been committed to identifying and nurturing students gifted in various aspects. I am glad to see that students from different backgrounds and with different talents are receiving awards to recognise their performance this year. With the further adjustment of local anti-epidemic measures, the Academy will resume selecting students to participate in face-to-face international competitions in the year ahead. I look forward to hearing the awardees’ experience of participating in competitions around the world being shared at the awards ceremony next year.’
