Annual Hotung Lecture 2017 - Identifying and Nurturing the Gifted to Show Unique Colours of Life
(Hong Kong - 2 December 2017) The Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education (HKAGE) greatly appreciates the contribution of education leaders and parents to identifying and nurturing the gifted. One of the HKAGE’s missions is to harness the power of the education industry, parents and all stakeholders to support the potential and leadership development of highly able students, the budding pillars of society.
Annual Hotung Lecture 2017 is a flagship HKAGE event and one of the significant events of the local education industry. This year’s lecture, themed “Identifying and Nurturing the Gifted”, gathered hundreds of educators and professionals in gifted education as well as parents of gifted learners to exchange views and to facilitate the development of gifted education.
Officiating guest Mrs Ingrid Yeung Ho Poi-yan, Permanent Secretary for Education, wished the event a great success and expected to see more gifted education activities coming from the HKAGE, which helps realise the sustainable development of gifted education and increase public understanding of this area. Professor NG Tai Kai, Executive Director of the HKAGE, thanked all stakeholders for their support in his welcoming speech, adding that gifted students are society’s “human capital” that drive Hong Kong forward to cope with the rapidly changing world. Prof. Ng hoped the lecture would illustrate the characteristics of gifted learners and the challenges facing these students. He invited all of us to provide the gifted with appropriate support, allowing them to live life to the fullest.
The HKAGE was honoured to have Professor Kuo Ching Chih as our keynote speaker, who delivered a speech on identifying gifted students and developing their diverse talent. Prof. Kuo has been studying how to identify gifted learners and has published a series of relevant works, in addition to conducting curriculum development and assessment of gifted education. She has a deep concern about the cognitive development of twice-exceptional gifted children and the affective development of gifted learners. We were also glad to have Samuel S. Robfogel, Senior Director, International Initiatives, Johns Hopkins Centre for Talented Youth to share with the attendees about the social and growth needs of highly able students.
