The 2nd HKAGE Student Biennial Conference – Inspire Ideas, Ignite Intellects

(Hong Kong – 31 October 2015) The 2nd Student Biennial Conference organised by The Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education (HKAGE) was held successfully today afternoon. The Conference entitled “Inspire Ideas, Ignite Intellects” attracted many secondary and primary students in Hong Kong to join. In his opening speech, Professor Ng Tai Kai, Executive Director of the HKAGE, said that all the shortlisted study projects were the fruits of the students’ hard work, and the Student Conference provided them with the opportunity to share their learning achievements with their peers. He also encouraged the students to exchange experience with each other.

In the keynote address straight afterwards, Mr Lee Chi Wo, Daniel, Lecturer of the Department of Sports Science and Physical Education at The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Former Olympic Games Hong Kong Triathlon Representative, shared his experiences in sports and key success factors with students. He attributed success to sufficient training and encouraged the students to endeavour to realise their ideals.

The Conference showcased 30 study projects covering the Mathematics and Sciences field and the Languages and Humanities field. 6 outstanding projects had been selected and the students who led these projects were given the opportunity to share their study ideas, thoughts and achievements with their peers in the concurrent sessions. Most of the project topics were closely related to everyday life with both creativity and practicality:

The heart-warming Care Mug – In order for users to have a drink at the right temperature anytime, the students of Sha Tin Government Secondary School created the “Care Mug” which is capable of heating up and cooling down drinks as per user preference. The Mug can also serve as a temperature sensor and prompt the user when a hot beverage becomes ready to drink after being left to cool without turning on the cooling function. The features are really thoughtful.

The interesting interactive eBook – The integration of information technology into learning is a major trend in the 21st century; more and more schools are utilising eBooks to facilitate student learning. A group of students of St. Paul’s Convent School developed several eBooks in the areas of Economics, Geography, History and Chinese Language. The students incorporated a great deal of interactive elements into their design so as to arouse their fellow students’ interest in Humanities and Chinese Language, and to encourage self-directed learning among them.

The coffee drinking habits of teenagers – Coffee shops have become the common venues for teenagers to hang out, where young people socialising with friends or surfing the internet over a cup of coffee are seen on every corner. Through a survey on coffee drinking habits of Hong Kong teenagers aged between 11 and 19, Cheng Wing Jun, a student of Wah Yan College, looked into their motivation to drink coffee and analysed the habits’ implications on teenagers’ financial conditions and health. The study found that the shop atmosphere, free Wi-Fi and socio-psychological factors are the main reasons why young people like to visit coffee shops, and the coffee drinking habits do not have negative impacts on their financial conditions and health.
Apart from presentation, the shortlisted students showcased their study achievements in poster format. During the exhibition, the posters caught the eye of many attendees who also asked questions and shared their ideas with the students conducting the projects. Some of these students believed that peer interactions can facilitate intellectual exchange and stimulate creativity, which is helpful in inspiring them to further study the relevant topics in the future.
