Gifted Education Exchange Platform Hong Kong Biennial Gifted Education Conference 2014 ‘Hong Kong Needs Talents, Talents Need Us’

(4th December 2014, Hong Kong) The two-day Hong Kong Biennial Gifted Education Conference 2014, with the theme ‘Hong Kong Needs Talents, Talents Need Us’ and co-organised by the Education Bureau (EDB) and The Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education (HKAGE), was launched today at the Education Bureau Kowloon Tong Education Services Centre.

Mrs TSE LING Kit Ching, Cherry, Permanent Secretary for Education and Professor NG Tai Kai, Executive Director of HKAGE gave welcome speeches at the Conference. Thematic speakers for the first day of the Conference included Dr CHENG Mo Chi, Moses, Chairman of Education Commission, Mr CHAN Wing Kit, Principal of the YWCA Hioe Tjo Yoeng College, Mrs CHAN LEUNG Suk Ching, Gloria, Principal of Kau Yan School and Mr WONG Lik Hak, Principal of SKH Bishop Baker Secondary School, thereby providing a professional platform for practitioners in education, including school principals and other stakeholders, to share their experiences in gifted education. We believe that the various contents with real-life examples can provide the participants with deepened insights into gifted education.

The theme ‘Hong Kong Needs Talents, Talents Need Us’ was chosen to acknowledge the fact that gifted students are important resources of our society. Our ultimate goal in gifted education is to nurture them to enable the development of their potentials, so that they can contribute to the Hong Kong society. The EDB and the HKAGE have been working together over the past few years to raise the awareness and understanding of gifted education of the public, especially amongst educators in primary and secondary schools. In the next stage, we will pursue our efforts to deepen the promotion of gifted education and to provide the school curriculum with supplementary support. This is to enhance the level of school-based gifted education, so that gifted students will be given appropriate challenges and balanced education for building up a talent pool for the future of Hong Kong.

As for the concurrent sessions to be held on Day 2, 5 December, a wide range of themes will be covered, including subjects such as Languages, Mathematics, Sciences, General Studies, Affective Education and Personal, Social and Humanities Education. Examples of the specific topics include ‘Flipping the Classroom via IT: Enhancing Self-directed Learning of Gifted Learners’ and ‘Heartland: The Belief in Differentiation to Bring Out the Best in Students and Teachers’, along with discussions on, for instance, how to enable students to master the highly efficient way of learning. Speakers of the concurrent sessions are representatives from the EDB, school principals, school subject divisional heads, etc.

With the opinion-exchange platform provided by the two-day conference, we hope the participants can bring the latest information and practical experience of gifted education back to their schools, and the students will be benefited eventually.
