The Award Presentation Ceremony of the 15th Hong Kong Robotic Olympiad

(Hong Kong – 1 June 2013) The 15th Hong Kong Robotic Olympiad, co-organised by the Hong Kong Robotic Olympic Association (HKROA), Faculty of Engineering at The University of Hong Kong and Department of Engineering at Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (Tsing Yi), concluded successfully.  The award presentation ceremony has been held this morning at the Lecture Hall of the Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education.

The annual Hong Kong Robotic Olympiad serves as a public platform for participating primary and secondary students to compete and exchange their technological skills. There are more than 60 games to be contested ranging from robot short-distance run, robot soccer and robot combat in the land-based category; and from swimming robot, rowing robot and shipwreck rescue and salvage robot in the ocean exploration. Each year, the hard work put forth by the participating students and teachers were highly recognised and appreciated. The winning students also had excellent performance in the International Robotic Olympiad organised by our organisation as well as in other local and international robotic competitions.

The Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education (HKAGE) co-hosted the ceremony. Mr Abraham Tang, Associate Director of the HKAGE, and Professor Norman C Tien, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at The University of Hong Kong, were the officiating guests of the ceremony. Both of them praised the awarded students for their creativity and encouraged them to continue to unleash their innovative potential. During the ceremony, the Robot Appearance Design Competition was staged as well. More than thirty students brought along their designs for the jury to select the winner. A total of 240 awards were presented during the ceremony.

To meet the community’s needs and reflect global trends, new items are added every year to the competition in order to offer opportunities to demonstrate creativities and contribute to the society. To promote technological development and modernisation of local culture, the HKROA launched the first Robot Bun Scrambling Competition and 2013 Bun Carnival in Cheung Chau last year in association with Cheung Chau Government Secondary School and Leisure and Cultural Services Department. This year, the Robot Dragon Boat will be introduced and the first Robot Dragon Boat Race will be held on 22 June at Hong Kong Science & Technology Parks. The race is co-organised by the HKROA, Creative Technology-Cultural Education Activity Centre and Hong Kong Science & Technology Parks in association with the HKU Faculty of Engineering, Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education, the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers and the HKAGE.
