Asian Physics Olympiad: HKAGE Student Members Get One Silver and One Bronze
(15 May 2013, Hong Kong) A team of eight student members of The Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education (HKAGE) representing Hong Kong at the 14th APhO in Bogor, Indonesia have returned home proudly with one silver, one bronze medals and three honourable mentions.
The silver medalist was Secondary Five student Cheng Ho-Ching, Justin from Queen’s College, while the bronze medalist was Secondary Five student Tam Pok-man from Sing Yin Secondary School. The honourable mentions were Secondary Five student Chan Wing-kin from G. T. (Ellen Yeung) College, Secondary Four Student Lui Ching-yin from Queen’s College and Wong Chun-yui from Diocesan Boys’ School. The remaining three members of the Hong Kong team were Secondary Five student Chan Pok-fung from Po Leung Kok No. 1 W. H. Cheung College, Secondary Five student Chang Yi-hua from St. Joseph’s College and Secondary Five student Cheng Man-hin from Shun Tak Fraternal Association Leung Kau Kui College.
The students are trainees under the 12-month Physics Enhancement Programme organised by the HKAGE and commissioned to HKUST with their Physics professors as instructors. Following outstanding performances in the Hong Kong Physics Olympiad 2012, these students were selected to take part in a series of enhancement courses before taking part in the APhO 2013.
Dr Stephen Tommis, the Executive Director of the HKAGE, congratulated the Hong Kong Team on achieving this successful result in the contest. He believed that the students could perform well in this competitive contest not only because of their abilities but also because of their hard work and efforts. He encouraged the students to maintain their persistence and enthusiasm in Physics which is vital for them to reach their goals in the future.
This year’s APhO was held from May 5 to May 13 in Bogor, Indonesia, with 145 contestants from 20 countries/regions participating. The APhO aims to promote education in physics, strengthen interaction and co-operation among experts in physics in Asia, and train and inspire teenagers who are highly talented in Physics.
The leader of the Hong Kong Team was HKUST’s Professor Yang Zhi-yu while the deputy leader was Our Lady of the Rosary College physics teacher Mr. Yu Kam-fung; Dr Ma Guancong from the HKUST’s Department of Physics and Dr Ng Shiu-cho from Fukien Secondary School served as observers. The trip was funded by the EDB.
